Dutch Royal House Criticized For Racist Painting
The Dutch royal family has been asked by various critics to get rid of a painting they say is an offensive reminder of wrongs from the Netherlands colonial past, but the Royal House defended the 19th-century work as an important part of the countrys history.
Homage of the Colonies decorates one side of Queen Beatrixs iconic gold-trimmed carriage, and depicts half-naked, brown-skinned women and men in servile poses bearing gifts to an enthroned white woman.
Thousands of fans line up each September to watch the popular queen travel in the carriage to address parliament.
Jeffry Pondaag of the Dutch Debts of Honor Committee co-authored an open letter published in national newspapers calling for the painting to be removed and placed in a museum to illustrate a nasty chapter of Dutch history.
私は回転できます。Dutch people have a big mouth about other peoples violations of human rights, but when it comes to something the Netherlands has done wrong, they wont answer the doorbell, he said in a telephone interview.
The Royal House dismissed the call to remove the painting in a brief response.
We are not going to rewrite history by destroying the Golden Carriage, said spokeswoman Renee Wesdorp.
Pondaag said that while the U.S. government has apologized for slavery and Australia has apologized for abuses of its native peoples, the Dutch government has gone no further than expressing regret for its colonization of Indonesia and involvement in slave trade in the Americas.
Dutch people are proud of their Golden Age, he said. Its celebrating getting rich by spilling the blood of others.
Earlier this week, a court in The Hague ordered the Netherlands to pay reparations for the summary executions up to 430 Indonesians in the village of Rawagedeh by Dutch soldiers in 1947.
Indonesia, then known as the Dutch East Indies, declared its independence from colonial rule when World War II ended in 1945. The Netherlands fought unsuccessfully to try to maintain control of its lucrative Asian outpost and Indonesia was finally recognized as independent in 1949.

I was in the home of a friend of mine. Also present was the father of my friends niece, well call him Mr. Bloggs. The (Indian) Commonwealth Games were on TV.
Mr Bloggs: F**king P**is, I just dont like them.
Silence.
My friend: Err, Pauls, like, half Indian.
This is not technically true. But for the purposes of somebody suggesting that I, or half of my family, or a good proportion of the worlds population, are inferior to someone who gives the impression of a fuckwitted chimpanzee on the basis of race, Ill let it slide – for the record, in my farraginous mix of genetic material, probably something like a quarter originates from the Indian subcontinent. Also, Pakistanis are not Indian, but I somehow doubt this guy knows or cares.
More silence. Mr Bloggs: Well. What can you say?
Indeed. At least he had the decency to look slightly embarrassed.
I havent got the time or energy for engaging every racist I encounter in earnest argument using things like facts and philosophy, mostly for the reason that those things dont work once somebody reaches the age of twelve and still holds racist views. Dont believe me? Find a racist and try to initiate a rational debate. Very rarely is it possible to get anywhere but back where you started. (Although the effort, though often doomed, is valuable, and I dont wish to devalue anyones efforts in that direction.)
This, instead, is how I decided to respond:
Thats all right - F**king P**is; coming over here and fucking our mums.
I think the irony was lost on him, but everybody else was laughing.

Im Tired of Sharing the Most Racist Things That Have Happened to Me, Are You?
Sorry folks, I just cant play along anymore. Those white folks on the right side of history have already heard the message and come along. Those others are deaf of ear, and there is nothing you can say to win them over.
Americans still lack a vocabulary for speaking in a sophisticated and nuanced way about racism. Moreover, they also have a void in their cognitive map, one that obviates any capacity for seeing how structures and institutions impact opportunity as 1) Americans historically describe themselves as being middle class (both millionaires and the underclass alike); and 2) many still believe that the Horatio Alger myth is real, even while the wealth gap widens and class mobility has greatly decreased and hardened in this, our time of Great Recession.

Australia's lost opportunity to condemn racism
I still believe that we have no choice but to engage with fundamentalism, hatred, and evil. Shunning it, avoiding it, or ignoring it will not make it vanish. It is too powerfully entrenched in too many minds, in too many places, for too many reasons.
Instead, it is a moral obligation of democracies to tackle head-on hateful speech, to debunk the intellectual and emotional errors of racism, and to blow-torch their flimsy foundations in stupidity, hypocrisy, or political expediency. Being in the room is more effective than standing outside of it.
Firmly putting our view and trying to persuade others of our values is the price of living in an international society of radically different world-views. That is after all why we have the United Nations, to allow a dialogue of difference, and to prevent an escalation towards war against those we dislike.
The best way to assuage racist instincts to violence is to confront them, not to hide in the dark, self-satisfied and virtuous, and vainly hope they will disappear.
